Freeciv Overview
Freeciv is a free, open source turn-based strategy game for Mac. Build a civilization from the ground up. Found cities. Research technology. Build an empire, then defend it. Play alone against the computer, or join other people online in real multiplayer games. Rulesets built to feel familiar to Civilization players are included. You can also swap in different rulesets to change how the whole game plays. A built-in map editor lets you design your own worlds instead of only playing on generated maps. A Metaserver browser helps you find and join public multiplayer games. The game supports a wide range of interface languages. A community of volunteer developers maintains it, still shipping real bug fixes and security patches.
Why Choose Freeciv Mac App
Commercial strategy games cost money and lock their rules down. Freeciv doesn't. It's a free, open source turn-based strategy game built around growing a civilization from the ground up. Found cities. Research technology. Build an empire. Play alone against the computer, or join other people online.
A recent update patched a real security vulnerability in how the game handles saved games and scenario files. That kind of maintenance keeps a long-running open source project safe to play online. Beyond the base game, rulesets let you change how the whole game plays. A built-in map editor lets you build your own worlds instead of only playing on generated ones.

What's New in Freeciv 3.2.6 Version
Version 3.2.6 is mostly a security and bugfix release:
- Fixed security vulnerabilities in how savegame and scenario files get handled
- Corrected the attack legality check for RandomMovement units
- Fixed a path finding issue tied to a negative Veteran_Build effect value
- Improved logging around player authentication on servers
- If you run or play on a Freeciv server, this update is worth installing. The security fix applies specifically to file handling.
Supported macOS Versions
Freeciv needs Mac OS X 10.7 or later. The Mac build is Intel-based. Apple Silicon Macs run it through Rosetta 2 rather than natively. The game itself isn't demanding. A large multiplayer game with many players and a big map benefits from more RAM, but a single-player game runs fine on almost any supported Mac.
How to Download and Install Freeciv Mac?
The official Freeciv project doesn't publish a direct Mac installer. This download packages the game specifically for Mac. Freeciv is also available through Homebrew for anyone who prefers that route.
- Click the Download button above to safely download the setup file.
- Open the downloaded file, then drag Freeciv into Applications.
- Launch it. If macOS shows a security prompt, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.
- Choose single-player against the computer, or connect to a multiplayer server to play online.
No account or purchase is needed. It's free to play right away.
