Refindo Overview
Refindo is a data recovery app for Mac that brings back deleted or lost files. It scans internal drives, external drives, USB sticks, and SD cards that macOS can detect. Quick Scan checks file system metadata for recent deletions. Deep Scan reads the drive sector by sector for formatted or damaged volumes. You can preview photos, PDFs, text files, and Office documents before you recover anything. Scanning, preview, and recovery all run on your Mac, so your files stay local. The scan only reads from the source drive. Refindo works with APFS, exFAT, FAT32, and NTFS volumes.
Why Choose Refindo Mac App
When a file goes missing, speed and caution matter most. Refindo is built around both. The scan is read-only, so it does not write anything to the drive you are inspecting. That matters because new writes can overwrite the very data you want back. The app also recommends saving recovered files to a different drive for the same reason.
Preview is the second advantage. You can open photos, text files, PDFs, and Word or Excel documents before you commit to recovery. If a preview looks clean, the file is likely recoverable. If it does not, you have saved yourself the cost and time. The free scan and preview let you check recoverability first.
Privacy is the third. Many recovery tools upload data or ask you to sign in. Refindo states that scanning, preview, and recovery run on the device and that files stay local. Filters by file type, location, and time then narrow a long result list to the few items you need. One honest limit applies. Recovery is never guaranteed, especially on SSDs that clear deleted blocks automatically.

What's New in Refindo 1.0.3 Version
- Quick Scan for metadata-based recovery of recent deletions
- Deep Scan for formatted or damaged volumes
- Free preview before any recovery
- Filtering by file type, location, and time
- Separate Apple Silicon and Intel builds
Supported macOS Versions
Refindo 1.0.3 requires macOS 12 (Monterey) or later. The developer offers separate downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and the official FAQ confirms both are supported. The main download button on the official site shows the Apple Silicon build, so Intel users should pick the Intel file. The developer does not list RAM requirements. A Deep Scan reads every sector, so scan time grows with drive size. Large drives take longer, and an external drive over a slow connection takes longest. Keep the Mac plugged in during long scans. Recovery chances are best on a drive you stopped using right after the loss.
How to Download and Install Refindo Mac?
Installing Refindo on Mac takes a minute. Pick the build that matches your processor.
- Click the Download button above to safely download the setup file.
- Open the downloaded file, then move Refindo into your Applications folder.
- Launch Refindo from Applications. If macOS asks you to confirm opening an app downloaded from the internet, click Open.
- If macOS asks for permission to access your disks, allow it so Refindo can scan them.
- Choose the drive you want to scan from the start screen.
Install Refindo on a different drive from the one you are recovering from. That keeps the lost data safe from overwriting.
How to Use Refindo Mac?
- Open Refindo and select the internal drive, external drive, USB stick, or SD card to scan.
- Start with Quick Scan if the files were deleted recently.
- Run Deep Scan if Quick Scan misses files, or if the drive was formatted or damaged.
- Filter the results by file type, location, or time to find what you need.
- Open a preview to check that a photo, PDF, or document is intact.
- Select the files you want and choose a recovery destination on a different drive.
- Open the recovered files to confirm they are complete.
Alternatives to Refindo
Time Machine: Built into macOS and free to use, it restores earlier versions of files from a backup drive, but only if a backup existed before the loss.
PhotoRec: Free, open-source recovery tool that scans drives and memory cards with read-only access and works across many file systems. It runs in a text-based interface, and its latest stable release listed is 7.2 from 2024.
